VHRR Rob Roy Hill Climb - May 5th 2024

The VHRR Rob Roy Hill Climb is back for another year in conjunction with our friends at the esteemed MG Car Club of Victoria. This iconic venue is steeped in Australian motorsport history, and a must see for any motorsport enthusiast.

Be there as the aromas of race cars and barbeques fill the air and the sounds of music from yesteryear and race cars old and new bounce off the trees of the Christmas Hills. The atmosphere at this incredible event is one for the bucket list.

The best of the best of Australian motorsport have raced here over the years, including our very own founding club patron, the late Sir Jack Brabham as well names such as Harry Firth, Stirling Moss, Jean Behra, Reg Parnell, Stan Jones, Lex Davison, Bill Patterson, Doug Whiteford, Peter Whitehead, Reg Hunt, Len Lukey, John Bowe and many more.

The Rob Roy Hill Climb venue located in the stunning Christmas Hills in Victoria, is the oldest of its kind in Australia, and the second oldest surviving dedicated hill climb facility in the world.

At the time of its construction, Rob Roy was one of only three bitumen surfaced, purpose built hillclimbs in the world, the other two being Shelsley Walsh and Prescott (UK).  Both of which are still in existence.

The Rob Roy venue was initially established by the Light Car Club of Australia in 1937 and ran until 1962, when bushfires destroyed the track. It wasn’t until 1993 that the race was run again, and it still continues today.

Cars compete to see who can climb the 695 metres track the quickest across a number of different categories, including sports cars, open cars, supercharged racing cars and more. In 1937 the fastest cars climbed the hill in 37 seconds. Now cars reach the summit in just over 20 seconds.

These days, the Rob Roy Hill Climb venue hosts close to ten different events every year in various guises and is known for its challenging course, featuring tight corners, steep inclines, and provides a thrilling test of skill and performance for drivers and their vehicles.

No hillclimb events were run at Rob Roy from June 2022 until March 2023 while extensive improvements were made to the facilities both on and off the track. Among the many trackside improvements, was a complete resurfacing of the hill climb track using a special motorsport mix. In addition to this, extensive improvements have been made to the overall facility inducing extensive earthworks to parking areas, as well as tiered aluminum spectator seating installed at three locations and improved spectator access to the turn two viewing area and also improved picnic areas, toilet upgrades and electrical and data Infrastructure. The Rob Roy hill climb venue is now once again back to its world-class roots.

The VHRR Rob Roy Hill climb is not just about historic cars. The event is open to all Motorsport Australia license holders with formula cars, tin tops, modern street cars and more tackling the 695 meter-long track.

The Rob Roy Hill Climb is located at 375 Clintons Rd, Smiths Gully VIC 3760.
